The Family Court presides over family law financial matters and parenting matters (or matters involving the care of children). However, the Family Court does not hear all family law cases. The majority of family law matters are dealt with in the Family Law Division of the Federal Circuit Court.

The Family Court generally deals with parenting matters that are complex in nature, such as matters that involve allegations of sexual or serious physical abuse; matters that involve multiple parties or multiple expert witnesses; complex applications seeking “no contact” with one of the parents; international child abduction cases and applications relating to special medical procedures.

The financial cases that the Family Court often hears are usually more complex in nature, such as matters with multiple parties or multiple expert witnesses; where valuations of complex trusts or corporate structures are required; where there are complex legal issues to be determined; and complex superannuation cases.

Generally speaking, family law cases in the Family Court Sydney are of a more difficult or complex nature than the more common cases, which require the attention of an experienced family lawyer.
