Every criminal matter in NSW, whether minor or serious, commences in the Local Court jurisdiction.

The Downing Centre Local Court is one of the largest Court complexes in NSW and is in the heart of the Sydney CBD.

The Downing Centre Local Court deals with criminal matters arising from the Sydney CBD and surrounding suburbs. However, a large part of the criminal law case load at the Court is made of of matters that are referred to it by other Local Courts, particularly strictly indictable (serious) criminal offences.
